about

About a year ago, give or take another year or so, I wrote down some simple lyrics (which later became the chorus to the song.)
I had recently purchased a vintage YO8 Yamaha keyboard with fully weighted 88 keys. I had, once upon a time, somewhat fancied myself a bit of a pianist, but unfortunately hadn't gotten to play one in years. I was excited to tickle the ivories. I just absolutely love the way weighted keys and an actual piano feels under meh fingers. I'm sure a lot of that excitement comes out with the piano in the song.

So, once I finished recording after a couple of weeks, I started the mixing and mastering process and I never could finish it. It just never sounded right. I replaced some drum parts, I took out bridges and verses in the music. I kinda threw the song under the rug. Timing, software issues, and a myriad of other reasons, I left it alone but came back a few months later and listened again and said, "hey, it's actually an okay song." I just started expecting more from it than it could possibly give me. At the end of the day, it's just a fuckin song. A brief moment in time, a picture.. you know what I'm saying.
Art should flow, not dwell.

INSPIRATIONS (musically)

Some influences for music/vocals would be Radiohead, Hans Zimmer, Mike Garson (David Bowie pianist), Coldplay, NIN

INSPIRATIONS (lyrically)

The overall meaning/process was basically me writing a few lyrics that felt political in nature, it felt like it was pointed at those that have been afflicted by how the elite run the shit show;
"We hear your cries
We hear you all
Love behind enemy lines
We're coming for you all"

Followed by hitting the record button on the mic after I finished recording the instruments and singing what came to mind which wound up being the first verse about two lovers in the city at night on a date and having a great time, but both being very aware of all the horrible things going on all around them. And in spite of these horrible/fearful things in the news and on their phones, they choose to not cave into the perpetual fear machine. They choose in that moment to not feel the need for a wall, or some kind of shelter, a gun.. They're choosing to not be afraid of what's around them. And the result is, they can appreciate having the luxury of a much more healthier relationship with each other.. starting with this beautiful night in the city together. So really, the song is about choosing love over fear.
And on a more macro/political level, not letting fear consume us where it overrides our basic compassion.

INSPIRATIONS (literally and figuratively)

Or to be a little more specific, it's about people existing in a world that's behind or beneath who they actually are, morally and ideologically, as people. Being represented by their nations, their own leaders, the companies around them, etc., being misrepresented by a world that speaks on their behalf and tells them what they want, how they're gonna be seen when their country bombs other countries, the policies that reflect back the kind of people they elected to do this "representing" and that sorta disconnect that occurs afterwards. And we're all caught in the middle of this battlefield between those in power, wanting to reach out to the other side of the world, to the "enemy", to ourselves, and just say and scream to each other, "This isn't me! This isn't who we are!"
